Arts High - Grades 6-8 Course Catalog
This class explores various approaches to writing poetry, short stories, and plays. Students will utilize memory, imagination, expression and creative language usage. Students will work on plot and character development, dramatic expression, and will have opportunities for performance during a Zoom class. Students are expected to exhibit a love of reading, sharing ideas, speaking out, and writing. Literary works relative to the course will be discussed.
The course is designed as a building block to develop a student’s career in filmmaking. Whether a student is new to filmmaking or comes with previous experience, this class will help them develop their skills. Each session includes hands-on projects that will address pre-production, directing with the camera, screenwriting essentials, camera operations, lighting with available light and introduction to editing.
This course is designed to give instrumentalists experience in improvising and performing in a small jazz ensemble. We will cover a variety of jazz styles including Blues, Bebop, Hard Bop and Latin Jazz styles. Students will learn to develop their own improvisational jazz language through listening, written music, and playing. Students can expect weekly practice assignments and regular jazz listening. The course is open to students who play brass, winds, strings, percussion and keyboard.
This course covers the fundamentals of Modern Dance, incorporating the core techniques of ballet with improvisational elements. The first period consists of a regular dance technique class. The second period concentrates on the elements of choreography through improvisation. The study of major choreographers and dance companies will be included, together with student reports and critiques.
This course will focus on the development of good Broadway style performance skills in voice, acting and dance. Students auditioning for this class will need to demonstrate ability in all three areas.
The Art of Photography
This course will feature hands-on technical skills in portraiture, lighting, still life, etc. Discussions on the world of fine art photography, galleries, and gallery presentation. Weekly assignments and open critiques. Students must have access to a camera with adjustable settings.
Acting – Scene Study
The Acting class will aid in the development of the students’ basic acting tools – their voice and bodies as well as possibilities of expression.
Acting – Improvisation
This Acting class will aid in the development of improv skills which will help the student loosen up and grow comfortable in front of an audience.
Visual Arts (Drawing and Painting)
The Drawing and Painting course will give serious students the opportunity to develop their technical skills and explore the creative process with a wide range of materials. Different techniques and approaches will be introduced, helping the students to develop new methods of self-expression.
Visual Arts (3-D)
The 3-D Visual Arts class will develop students’ skills in working with three-dimensional materials.
Visual Arts Anime / Manga Drawing
A fascinating subject that many professional animators have captured online, on TV and in video games. Anime, a word for Japanese animation, includes comics called manga with fictional characters that exaggerate the human form. The class centers around the figure, where anatomy, construction and movement are studied in conjunction with each other. In addition to figure construction, students learn about costume design, gesture, facial expression, inking and color techniques.
A creative approach to vocal technique, this vocal music class will include breathing, placement, sight singing and music reading/theory. Students will work on singing solo numbers as well as in groups. Special attention to building confidence and working together cooperatively will be important parts of the class.
