Multi-Genre Writing
(6th, 7th and 8th grade)
This class explores various approaches to writing poetry, short stories, and plays. We will search for memory, imagination, expression and creative language usage; also, plot and character development, dramatic expression, and opportunities for performance in the classroom. Students are expected to exhibit a love of reading, of sharing ideas, speaking out, and writing. Literary works relative to the course
will be discussed.
Modern Dance (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
This course covers the basic fundamentals of Modern Dance, incorporating the basics of ballet with improvisational elements. The first period consists of a regular dance technique class. The second period concentrates on the elements of choreography through improvisation. The study of major choreographers and dance companies will be included, together with student reports and critiques.
Jazz Improvisation (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
This course is designed to give instrumentalists experience in improvising and performing in a small jazz ensemble. We will cover a variety of jazz styles including blues, bebop, hard bop, and latin jazz styles. Students can expect weekly practice assignments and regular jazz listening. This course is open to students who play brass, winds, strings, percussion and keyboard.
Musical Theatre (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
The course will focus on the development of good vocal techniques. Class instruction will be evenly focused on Broadway style performance skills in voice, acting and dance. Students auditioning for this class will need to demonstrate ability in all three areas.
Theatre Arts (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
The Theatre Arts classes consist of developing the students’ basic acting tools – their voices and bodies as well as possibilities of expression. Improvisation will help students loosen up and grow comfortable in front of an audience.
Visual Arts (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
The Visual Arts courses give serious students an opportunity to develop technical skills and explore the creative process with a wide range of materials, including paint, mixed media, 3-D materials. Different techniques and approaches will be introduced.
Photography, The Art Of (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
Hands-on technical skills in portraiture, lighting, still life, etc. Discussions on the world of fine-art photography, galleries and gallery presentation.
Weekly assignments and open critiques.
