CREATIVE WRITING (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
Multi-Genre Writing
Poetry, Short Stories, Plays and/or Essays
This class explores various approaches to writing poetry, short stories, and plays. We will search for memory, imagination, expression and creative language usage; also, plot and character development, dramatic expression, and opportunities for performance in the classroom. Students are expected to exhibit a love of reading, of sharing ideas, speaking out, and writing. Literary works relative to the course will be discussed.
DANCE (6th 7th and 8th grade)
Modern Dance
This course covers the basic fundamentals of Modern Dance, incorporating the basics of ballet with improvisational elements. The first period consists of a regular dance technique class. The second period concentrates on the elements of choreography through improvisation. The study of major choreographers and dance companies will be included, together with student reports and critiques.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (7th and 8th grade)
Jazz Improv
This course is open to students who play brass, winds, strings, percussion and keyboard. Players develop their inner senses to create improvisational music. Attention will be spent on development of performance on one’s instrument without written music. Also included, listening assignments and a final exam.
VOCAL MUSIC (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
Vocal Music
A creative approach to vocal technique, this vocal music class will include breathing, placement, sight singing and music reading/theory. Musical theater skills will be incorporated, including style, acting and character development, movement and gestures. Special attention to building confidence and working together cooperatively will be important parts of the class.
THEATRE ARTS (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
Theatre Arts
The Theatre Arts classes consist of developing the students’ basic acting tools – their voices and bodies as well as possibilities of expression. Improvisation will help students loosen up and grow comfortable in front of an audience. .
VISUAL ARTS
Drawing & Painting
(6th, 7th and 8th grade)
The Visual Arts courses give serious students an opportunity to develop technical skills and explore the creative process with a wide range of materials, including paint, mixed media, 3-D materials. Different techniques and approaches will be introduced.
Photography, The Art Of(7th and 8th grade)
Hands-on technical skills in portraiture, lighting, still life, etc. Discussions on the world of fine-art photography, galleries and gallery presentation. Weekly assignments and open critiques.
Sculpting(6th, 7th and 8th grade)
The Sculpting class will develop students’ skills in working with three dimensional materials. Students will receive instruction and practice in model design, drawing and clay sculpting.
FILMMAKING
(7th and 8th grade)
Filmmaking
This course is designed as a building block to develop a student’s career in filmmaking. Whether a student is new to filmmaking or comes with previous experience, these classes will help them develop their skills. Each session includes hands-on projects that will address pre-production, directing with the camera, screen writing essentials, camera operations, lighting with available light, and introduction to editing.
