WHAT
IS THE PROGRAM ABOUT?
The Arts High School program is a special release-time
program for gifted and talented teens. Students
interested in joining the program must audition
to participate. It is administered by the Arts
& Education Center which has been operating
the program in Middlesex County for the past
29 years. A similar program for school districts
in Monmouth County, NJ was begun in January
2004. A program for Ocean ounty will be
coming in 2010. The Middlesex County Arts High
holds its classes at the Stelton Community Center
in Edison and on the campus of Middlesex College.
The Monmouth County Arts High holds its classes
at Neptune High School in Neptune, NJ.
Students selected for
the program will receive courses in the literary,
performing and visual arts taught by distinguished
teaching artists. The courses are taught at
an advanced level and provide a rigorous
curriculum for developing artistic skills and
creative expression in the art form of the student’s
choice.
Arts High School
classes are held from January to May, with each
student scheduled to attend one day per week
for a fourteen week term. In cooperation with
sending high schools, the program seeks, identifies
and recruits talented students through the following
means: Press releases; mailings of AHS literature
to schools, public libraries, students’
homes, and others; announcements in the schools.Auditions,
opened to all interested students, are held
in December. Students must register in advance.
Student acceptance into the Arts High program
is dependent on their schools approval of their
participation in the program.

Classes are held on Mondays from 1:30-4:30 PM
for the Monmouth County Arts High and on Tuesdays
from 1:00-4:00 PM for Middlesex County Arts
High. Classes start in January and continue
for 14 weeks.
WILL I BE LET OUT OF SCHOOL TO ATTEND THE CLASSES?
Yes, you will be released from your regular school each week to attend the classes. Students, however, are responsible for making up any missed work or assignments.
HOW WILL I GET TO THE CLASSES EACH WEEK?
School buses will pick up the students at their school and return them to their home school after Arts High School classes are completed.
HOW DOES MY SCHOOL SUPPORT THE PROGRAM?
The participating school districts in Middlesex & Monmouth County act as sending schools. Superintendents appoint school liaisons, who distribute program literature, meet with interested students, assist with special needs and remain in contact with our office for the season. Participating schools pay a prescribed tuition fee for each enrolled student that includes busing.
WHAT FEES DO THE STUDENTS PAY?
Students in participating school districts are responsible for payment of an audition fee ($35-$50, depending on how many classes the student is auditioning for) and an enrollment fee of $50 which is payable once a student is accepted into the program. There is also a $35 material fee for students in the Visual Arts or Photography class.
WHAT CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE?
There are over twenty different classes being
offered in the Middlesex County Arts High School
or the Monmouth County Arts High School in the
2009-2010 school year. You

WHO ARE THE INSTRUCTORS?
All Arts High instructors are distinguished working artists, most have advanced degrees in their area of expertise.

Students who pass their course of study are
awarded Certificates of Achievement or an Honors
Certificate. Students’ records are
forwarded to their sending schools for proficiency
credits and notation on school transcripts.
CAN I RECEIVE COLLEGE CREDIT FOR THE CLASS?
Several of the Middlesex & Monmouth
County Arts High courses have been accredited
by Middlesex County College in Middlesex County
or Brookdale Community College in Monmouth County.
Students who register for credit and successfully
complete these courses will receive a
